New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
